A National Guard member based in Yucatan lost his life on Sunday night, just minutes after the conclusion of the Progreso Sunset concert, where the reggaeton duo Zion and Lennox performed.
The young man was on his day off and decided to attend the event that took place by the sea, in the Malecón Internacional de Progreso area.
Thousands of people did the same, so there were police officers from the Municipal Police of Progreso and their Ecological division around the event area.
The concert passed without incident from 5 to 10 pm. However, after the musical performances, thousands of people moved at the same time towards the Malecón Tradicional.
It was at this point where naval officer Guillermo Hernández, 32 years old and originally from Campeche, was involved in a fight with a person identified as Bonancio “N”.
At some point in the argument, the latter pulled out a knife from his pockets and attacked the National Guard member, causing several wounds to his abdomen and chest, before attempting to disappear among the crowd.
The victim of the attack was attended to by paramedics from the Mexican Red Cross who were nearby and urgently transported to the Naval Hospital located in Progreso. However, due to his critical condition, he lost his life at this location.
Meanwhile, municipal and state police officers undertook the task of searching for the perpetrator among all the people present, resulting in the arrest of two individuals.
Elements of the State Investigation Police (PEI) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) cordoned off the area where the attack took place, in order to collect evidence to use against the alleged perpetrator.
