Magical towns in Quintana Roo among the most visited in Mexico

During the first quarter of the year, Tulum, Bacalar, and Isla Mujeres were among the top 10 Magical Towns in Mexico to visit, mainly for domestic tourism.

According to a report by the Despegar agency, Tulum is the national favorite for spending a few days, attracting domestic tourism with 62% of visitors. In the case of Bacalar, it ranked third with 94% of Mexican visitors, and Isla Mujeres ranked ninth with 34% local influx.

Alejandro Sánchez, Loyalty and Financial Alliances Manager at Despegar, highlighted that Mexico’s tourist offer has become more diverse and this has undoubtedly helped to boost local tourism in communities, as on average 8.5 million Mexican travelers arrive at hotels located in these destinations, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.

“It is important to note that there are 10 destinations considered Magical Towns, which had the highest number of travel reservations in the first quarter of the year, led by Tulum, San Cristóbal de las Casas, and Bacalar,” he added.

In the three tourist destinations in Quintana Roo, the largest proportion of tourists would be domestic. Despegar’s analysis showed that in the case of Tulum, the main travelers who chose it were Mexicans, with 62%; Chileans, 15%; Brazilians, 7%; Argentines, 7%; and Americans, 3%, making it a destination that also attracts cultural tourists.

In Bacalar, the behavior of travelers is as follows: Mexicans, 94%; Americans, 3%; Panamanians, 2%; Argentines and Brazilians, 1%, respectively. Meanwhile, in the case of Isla Mujeres, visitors from the neighboring country lead the visits, with 38%; Mexicans, 34%; Panamanians, 15%; Argentines, 7%, and Chileans, 1%.

Despegar stated that six out of ten Mexican travelers prefer to travel to colonial Magical Towns; likewise, the average stay in these places is three to five days.
