With the exhibition “Recuerdos” (Memories) by designer Federico Vanden Broeck, the gallery of the “José Peón Contreras” Theater in Mérida reopened this Saturday, marking the return of this cultural precinct after the fire that took place on the afternoon of November 1, 2022.
After five months of being closed, the gallery located on the south side of the building once again received art pieces that make reference to a bestiary of animals from Greek, Maya and Aztec mythologies, by means of 14 metal sculptures inspired by medieval descriptions.
During the inauguration, the author said that some of these beings arise from dreams or the collective unconscious, but all of them continue to inhabit the imaginary and even have a greater “materialization”, thanks to representation and visualization technologies, which make it possible to achieve three-dimensional, high-definition and highly realistic images.
“It is inspired by medieval bestiaries and, in particular, Borges made a compilation of different fantastic beings. I took some, the ones I found most interesting, and developed these with metal, one of the materials I am working with, recently,” commented the artist.
The exhibition, which will remain until May 28, marks the return of activities inside the “José Peón Contreras” Theater, which had kept all its doors closed since the fire that affected a large part of the main hall.
