The State Coordination of Civil Protection of Yucatan (Procivy) pointed out that burning trash in homes and other places should be avoided to reduce the number of fires in Yucatan.

Regarding this issue, Enrique Alcocer Basto, head of the department, reported that most of the more than a thousand fire reports they have attended to were due to burning trash, although all were extinguished immediately.

“Burning trash is unfortunately the main reason for fires. That is why we urge people not to burn trash, it is a very bad habit that should be avoided,” he said.

“Fire incidents always increase on weekends and holidays. Right now, everything is under control, but we still have Children’s Day, Mother’s Day, and the weekends of the next month and a half, where incidents tend to increase,” he added.

He referred to 50% of the incidents occurring in Merida and the rest in various sectors of the State.

He also mentioned that on April 20th, burning activities will begin in Tizimin until Celestun, which could cause a higher risk of fires if the necessary measures are not taken.
