Cancun, Quintana Roo.- With an average hotel occupancy rate of 85 percent, Holy Week began and is expected to increase in the coming days, as air operations increase. According to the daily report of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, the latest occupancy rate for Cancun was 85.4 percent, for Puerto Morelos it was only 75.7 percent and for Isla Mujeres, it exceeded 86.9 percent.
Meanwhile, Cancun International Airport has reported an average of 580 daily operations each day. In recent weeks there has been a good performance in arrivals and departures and proof of this is that passenger traffic increased by 16.9 percent during the entire month of March, compared to the same period in 2022, as it went from 784 thousand 985 operations to 917 thousand 858, resulting in an annual rate of increase of 24.75 in passenger traffic.
According to the traffic report of Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste, which operates in Mexico, the United States and Colombia, total passenger traffic for March 2023 totaled 6.1 million passengers, 6.7 percent more than in March 2022.
“Passenger traffic increased year-over-year by 11.8 percent in Mexico, 9.3 percent in Puerto Rico and Colombia had a 9.1 percent decrease. Passenger traffic growth in Mexico and Puerto Rico was driven mainly by the domestic segment by 20.1 percent and 6.4 percent and by international traffic by 6.2 percent and 47.9 percent, respectively,” said Asur.
And it is the Mexican Caribbean destinations that are leading the increase. In terms of international traffic, Cancun reported an increase of 5.5 percent and Cozumel an increase of 8.6 percent, while in Mexico as a whole, Cancun registered an increase of 8.8 percent and Cozumel an increase of 0.2 percent.
The hotel sector expects that during the rest of the vacation season some hotels may reach 100 percent occupancy, some even expect massive arrivals by road; jobs will be added to thousands of vacation rental units via internet, distributed throughout the state.
