With the participation of four chicharronerías, the sixth edition of the Chicharra Festival of Xcalachén kicked off this Saturday, an event with which the municipality of Mérida aims to reactivate the economy of this emblematic area of the Yucatecan capital.

From 11 in the morning, people from all corners of the city began to gather in the area, eager to taste this beloved Yucatecan dish. The people of Xcalachén did the same, and welcomed visitors with pleasure.

After noon, the surroundings of the old neighborhood were packed with diners who walked around looking for a place to enjoy with their families. At 1 p.m., the director of Economic Development and Tourism of the city council, José Luis Martínez Semerena, cut the inaugural ribbon.

As in previous editions, the streets of Xcalachén were adorned with graffiti by urban artists who showcased their work on its walls. Motifs of nature and human rights enlivened the “chicharreada” for the attendees.

Under the tents set up on 64th Street in the second block of the Historic Center of Mérida, several tables were distributed, crowned with the star of the evening: La Chicharra. Among the polomo, entresijo, and maciza, people enjoyed the festival.

Around Xcalachén, there are four or more beer vendors, and long lines of thirsty customers formed outside each one. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the city registered 37 degrees, but the heat index exceeded this figure.

The clock marked 3 p.m. when several of the improvised neighborhood stalls announced that “they no longer had anything left”. No flans, no bolis, no micheladas. On the other hand, the chicharra establishments could not keep up with demand.
