Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal met with state cabinet members to review the progress of the Ie-Tram public transportation project, a project that will make Yucatán the only public transportation system in Latin America that will be 100% electric and will connect Mérida, Umán and Kanasín.

Together with the general directors of the Institute of Mobility and Urban Territorial Development (Imdut), Rafael Hernández Kotasek, and the Institute of Highway Infrastructure of Yucatán (INCAY), Sergio Chan Lugo, Vila Dosal examined how the process of this important project is developing as part of the Metropolitan System “Va y ven”, which will transform public transportation for the benefit of Yucatecan families.

During the meeting, the Governor recalled that the Ie-Tram will be the only one of its kind in Latin America and the first electric route in the southeast of Mexico with 3 routes that will connect more than 137 neighborhoods, 80 existing routes and 20 tourist points, through modern vehicles that are only operating in some cities in Europe and offers a mobility option and all the benefits of a streetcar, but with the flexibility of a bus, for more environmentally and people friendly trips.

In terms of sustainability, the Governor highlighted that progress is being made in the installation of a concrete pavement that is low in carbon, which will contribute to reduce emissions and make this a more environmentally friendly means of mobility.

The use of this type of material for every 6 cubic meters is equivalent to 14 trees planted and growing for 10 years or to taking 67 cars out of circulation; also, the Governor has already conducted some tests of ecological solar lamps that do not use electricity and work by sensors to increase luminosity.

In addition to these efforts, the construction of a 7.5 megawatt Solar Energy Park at the “Nachi Cocom” Station of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will allow the Ie-Tram’s energy supply to come from a renewable and sustainable source.

It is worth remembering that the Ie-Tram will be a reality thanks to the teamwork promoted by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, since a total of 2,820 million pesos will be invested, of which 60% will be provided by the State; 23% by the Federation, and 16% by the private sector, a budget that includes the units, complementary road and electrical infrastructure, with adjustments to the route and the Historic Center.

It will be a 100 kilometer route, through 5 routes with high demand: Centro-Umán and the Engineering Faculty of the Autonomous University of Yucatán (UADY), Kanasín, Poxilá and Teya towards the first square of Mérida, with paths for public transportation and urban mobility.

For its operation, users will travel in innovative units, which make this service sustainable by being 100% electric with zero emissions and reducing noise pollution; the C02 they absorb is equivalent to more than 170,000 trees planted over 10 years.

The meeting was attended by the Secretaries of Public Works (SOP), Aref Karam Espósitos; Public Safety (SSP), Luis Felipe Saidén Ojeda; Administration and Finance (SAF), Olga Rosas Moya; of the State Comptroller General’s Office (SECOGEY), Lizbeth Basto Avilés; of Sustainable Development (SDS), Sayda Rodríguez Gómez; and the Undersecretary of Energy of the Ministry of Economic Development and Labor (SEFOET), Juan Carlos Vega Milke.

As well as the general director of the Institute for the Construction and Conservation of Public Works (INCOPY), Virgilio Crespo Méndez. Also present were the State Legal Advisor, Yussif Heredia Fritz; the General Coordinator of Advisors, Álvaro Juanes Laviada, and the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Edgar Ramírez Pech.
