MÉRIDA, Yucatan, April 2, 2023.- The beginning of the vacation period, which will bring about greater mobility of vehicles and people in the state territory, conditions which, together with the high temperatures, are factors of fire risks, the State Civil Protection Coordination called on the population to contribute to prevent them.
The head of Procivy, Enrique Alcocer Basto, made an attentive call to local, national and foreign travelers not to throw glass containers, cigarette butts or burn garbage in yards or on roadsides, as these are the most frequent causes of incidents.
The public servant warned that as the fire season progresses, which covers the months of March, April and May, the report of incidents increases, especially in the capital city of Merida and the surrounding municipalities, although 48 municipalities are affected.
The jurisdictions in which the greatest number of incidents have been reported are Mérida (280), Kanasín (32), Umán (29), Oxkutzcab (27), Tixkokob (13) and Maní (12), most of them in piles of garbage, as well as in bushes and pastures.
Ixil, Motul, Muna, Conkal, Yobaín and Sotuta, with more than ten cases, followed by Celestún, Hunucmá, Dzidzantún and Ticul with fewer cases.
In Progreso, Tixpehual, Tizimín, Tekax, Dzilam González, Hocabá, Hoctún and Tekal de Venegas the reports totaled more than four each. The remaining municipalities reported between two and three incidents each.
In view of the above, the head of Procivy asked the citizens who will be traveling through the state’s territory during this vacation season to cooperate with the authorities in fighting fires in the state’s territory, by reporting to the toll free number 9-1-1.
