Andrés Manuel López Obrador, president of Mexico, met this Friday with senators from the pro-government National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and its allies, in the middle of the recess of the ordinary session of the Senate, after the sit-in of more than 24 hours of legislators from the opposition.

“We met with senators who represent, with great dignity, our beloved people and promote the movement for the transformation of Mexico,” said the president on his official Twitter account.

The meeting that, according to various local media, was convened by López Obrador, took place in the midst of a series of controversies between pro-government senators and the opposition bloc, who were unable to meet at the Senate headquarters, which is why Morena legislators and their allies opted for an alternate venue to discuss the pending reforms.

In the meeting with the president were members of Morena, the Labor Party (PT), Green Ecologist of Mexico (PVEM), and Social Encounter (PES), in addition to Claudia Sheinbaum, head of government of the capital; Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Foreign Relations, and Adán Augusto López Hernández, head of the Ministry of the Interior.

The Morena parliamentary group reported that the ordinary session of the Senate of the Republic would be moved to another place because the opposition took over the rostrum on Thursday to demand that the appointments of the National Institute of Transparency, and Access to Information be made. Information and Protection of Personal Data (Inai).

The legislators’ session was resumed in the old Xicoténcatl mansion, in the center of Mexico City, a building that served as the Chamber of Deputies in the 19th century and is currently a museum.
