MÉRIDA, Yucatan – This Thursday Colorado State University issued its first forecast for the 2023 Tropical Cyclone Season, indicating that 13 named tropical cyclones and 6 hurricanes are expected, of which 2 would be intense.
According to the forecast, a slightly below-average season is expected for the Atlantic Ocean, as this year there will be 13 named cyclones, when the average is 14; and there will be 6 hurricanes, when the average is 7.
Of these 6 hurricanes, 2 would be classified as intense this 2023 (in categories 3, 4 and 5 of the Saffir-Simpson scale), when the average is 3.
The 2023 Cyclone Season will be subject to the presence of the ‘El Niño’ weather phenomenon, which could arrive between May and July of this year.

The statement from Colorado State University indicates that the great uncertainty that exists is that the intensity and strength that the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon will reach, especially in autumn, is unknown.
Therefore, as always, it is recommended that Yucatecans begin preparations prior to these events to avoid losses or tragedies.
The hurricane season in the Atlantic basin officially begins on June 1 and concludes on November 30.
