Mérida, Yucatán, March 14, 2023.- Rossini’s The Thieving Magpie Overture, Mozart’s Night Serenade No. 6 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 “London” are part of the repertoire that the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra (OSY) will perform this Friday, March 17, and Sunday March 19 at 8:00 pm and 12:00 noon, respectively, at the Palacio de la Música.
During the OSY rehearsal this Tuesday, which also included the official integration of José Areán, who will serve as interim conductor for the following programs, it was explained that the highlight of these numbers will be Symphony 104 “London,” a work by the so-called father of the genre, Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), considered along with Mozart the great promoter of the symphony and the period of classicism in music.
Both performances will be conducted by Yucatecan Alejandro Basulto as guest conductor.
Accompanied by the head of the Ministry of Culture and the Arts, Loreto Noemí Villanueva Trujillo, and the Director of the Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán and member of the OSY Commission, Javier Álvarez Fuentes, conductor Aréan held a meeting with the musicians, He emphasized that one of the priorities in this stage of the OSY will be teamwork, as this is the seal with which he conceives the leadership of a group with a long trajectory, and which is shaping up to consolidate itself in the eyes of Yucatán and the world.
“Whenever I have been in an institution as a guest, as a regular, as an advisor, it has been to grow its capacity to communicate with the public, to expand its repertoire, its presence, which is what this project aims to do. The OSY is an orchestra that I love, with which I have had a very good musical relationship, and the horizons that we can imagine if we all work together are enormous,” he emphasized.
Regarding Basulto, who will be conducting the concerts on Friday, March 17, and Sunday March 19, to give continuity to the programmed concerts and the new management model of the OSY, it is worth mentioning that he has taken master classes with renowned conductors such as David Briskin, Tong Chen, Hans Graf, Carlos Spierer, and Neil Varon. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Conducting at the University of Houston with the support of the Schissler Foundation Fellowship and a Fonca-Conacyt scholarship.
He worked his second season as an assistant conductor at the Moores Opera Center, and has studied composition and also Orchestra Conducting, and Film Music at ESMUC (Barcelona, Spain) and the Conservatorio de las Rosas de Morelia. It is worth mentioning that Basulto conducted the OSY at the end of October 2022, when they presented the literary musical repertoire, “Peter and the Wolf”, by Sergey Prokofiev, and “The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant”, by Francis Poulenc.
