Yucatan cattle ranchers seek to raise the sanitary status of their animals

Yucatan’s Secretary of Rural Development (Seder), Jorge Diaz Loeza, revealed that the Yucatan livestock sector intends to introduce a greater number of animals to the United States and for this reason, they need to raise their sanitary status.

The official explained that several weeks ago they had a visit from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, whose main function is to protect and promote agricultural welfare, regulate transgenic organisms, and manage wildlife; and of course to verify which animals enter their country.

Improved standards

He detailed that there is already a commercialization of cattle in the neighboring country to the north, as well as in other entities of the country, however, he affirmed that this verification will improve the sanitary status of the State which will allow continuing selling meat and live cattle.

However, it is important to remember that Yucatan enjoys a type A livestock sanitary status, which facilitates the commercialization of animals, so the agency’s visit was with the purpose of improving some details and thus obtaining a positive verification on the subject.

“This agency, together with the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (Senasica), made observations that we had to comply with, we complied with what they marked us, they come and verify us and everything is going quite well. We have not had any results, but we hope they will soon give us positive results,” he said.

He added that the improvement of the sanitary status helps in the commercialization of the products produced in Yucatan, something that is currently being experienced, since the State enjoys a better price for live cattle, with a difference of 10 pesos compared to other states such as Tabasco and Chiapas, which lost their sanitary status.
