Tizimín, Yucatán, March 9, 2023 – Misogyny, harassment, and arbitrary dismissals by the city council headed by Pedro Francisco Couoh Suaste were denounced during the International Women’s Day celebration.
More than 100 women led by Nelva Puc Sulub, leader of the Confederación Revolucionaria de Obreros y Campesinos (CROC) gathered in the park of San José Nabalam to march for the event.
As they passed by the installations of the State Attorney General’s Office they demanded that the authorities do their job in the area of justice for women who have been victims of femicide, sexual abuse, robbery, among others “instead of defending criminals.
On the scene, Nelva Puc narrated the martyrdom she suffers after seven years ago she lost her daughter who was murdered by her husband in the neighboring state of Quintana Roo.

“Before the eyes of society, the murderer disguised himself as innocent. With his words full of cynicism he labeled me as crazy. For seven years I have mourned my daughter. Today this wretch is in custody and I will fight for him to get what he deserves. His arrest happened just a few days ago, on February 14 of this year, but it is not precisely because of my crying and begging, it happened because I pressured and annoyed the authorities to exhaustion,” she said.
Later, the demonstrators went to the municipal palace where they demanded respect from Mayor Pedro Couoh Suaste for the women who work at City Hall, since many of them suffer harassment and are fired when they try to denounce.
They also asked for more security for women due to the wave of robberies in the city and the constant harassment they suffer due to the lack of police vigilance.
