Woman complains about ‘Playa Incluyente’ in Progreso; no staff, no police assistance

Cristina Sánchez, a tourist from Progreso, was disappointed when she visited the Inclusive Beach at the Malecón Internacional, because apart from the fact that there was no staff to help her, a drunken man intimidated her, and no municipal police officer helped her when the wheelchair-bound woman asked for police assistance.

“I arrived on Sunday at 13:00 hours and occupied part of the space at the Inclusive Beach, but I was surprised that there was no staff on such an important day like that, when many people with disabilities want to go to the sea, however, I did not take it seriously and occupied part of the space, but I found a man in a drunken state,” said the complainant.

The woman, a native of Valladolid, said that she noticed the man invading the site with beer cans, but with the intention of enjoying the traditional boardwalk. When I complained to the man, he answered me in a bad way, almost scolding me, so I had to calm myself down, because my family had already noticed the situation. I decided to leave and go to another place with the help of my companions, she said.

Another disappointment came for the tourist when she began to call from her wheelchair to the DSPT agents she spotted nearby, however, in the face of rejection, she proceeded to raise her hand to another element, but from the Tourist Police who was on board a four-wheeler, although to increase her disappointment, she did not receive any attention either.

“It certainly was a bad experience. Therefore, I would like that through the media the people of the City Hall be urged to take action on the matter. It is unbelievable that on Sundays the staff of this site is resting when it is the day when there is more affluence, apart from the fact that many people misuse these facilities due to the lack of surveillance,” she added.

During the interview, it was surprising when the interviewee pointed out that part of her work is altruism, where one of her best projects was in Playa del Carmen, where with the Rehabilitation and Special Education Center (CREE), Playa Esmeralda also became inclusive, although it does not compare to the bad protocols exercised by the administration in charge of Julián Zacarías Curi.

“There is a permanent work team there to help you get to the sea and to stay in the beds for as long as you want. Besides, there is DIF staff ready to help you. Also the security area gives you more confidence because the navy is present by sea and land”, concluded Cristina Sanchez.

This is not the first time that tourists with disabilities denounce the administration of Julián Zacarías Curi, as there have been several publications denouncing that the Inclusive Beach is not being respected, since on Sundays groups of beer drinkers can be seen in this palapa.

Among the comments that this correspondent has received, is that although the signs located in this space specify that whoever misuses the space will be sanctioned, beer drinkers continue to gather when the staff leaves, from Monday to Saturday. On Sunday it was confirmed that, indeed, no workers are still there.

The Inclusive Beach was inaugurated around the second half of 2019. There are usually two people working there apart from a lifeguard team located a few meters from the space. Unfortunately, cases like the one described in this note are frequent.
