Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador inaugurated the 86th Banking Convention of the Association of Banks of Mexico (ABM), a meeting that puts Yucatán in the spotlight of the country, bringing together the main players in the sector to strengthen national economic development, bringing new credit and financing opportunities to Yucatecan families who need them most.

Accompanied by the president of the ABM, Daniel Becker Feldman, the Governor and the President led the start of this activity, which, under the slogan “Challenges and opportunities: inclusion, sustainability and nearshoring,” is being held in the city of Merida until March 17.

At the event, Becker Feldman expressed his gratitude to Vila Dosal for his hospitality and the hospitality with which the local population has received the bankers of the Republic, making this 86th edition of the meeting one of the most attended.

“As financial institutions, we want to renew ties with Yucatan and the southeast; that is why we are bringing this Convention here, as I am convinced that it will give a boost to this region to advance in its development and greater competitiveness,” he said.

Finally, he called to take advantage of the circumstances that now arise in terms of attracting investment in the country, as this is the best way to contribute to the dynamics of growth and equity among its inhabitants.

When addressing his message, Vila Dosal thanked the leader of the organization for the trust placed in Yucatan to organize such a transcendental meeting for the Republic, since it allows us to demonstrate that we have the infrastructure to host events of international relevance.

He also expressed his gratitude to López Obrador for focusing and setting his eyes on the southeast, with a vision to close the inequality gap between this region and the central and northern areas of Mexico. “Thanks to the commitment he has put into the Peninsula and the collaboration we are doing great things,” he added.

Proof of this is that the state is experiencing a historic moment, he commented, as 2021 was the best year in economic growth and job generation, while, in 2022, an unprecedented number of foreign direct investment and tourist arrivals were recorded.

“This would not be possible without the push of the Federation and the hand in hand work we have done because, today, we are generating conditions for growth and the good results to be sustainable,” he said.

Before the governor of the Bank of Mexico, Victoria Rodríguez Ceja, and the president of the National Banking and Securities Commission, Jesús de la Fuente Rodríguez, Vila Dosal recalled that strategic works are being carried out to detonate the capacities of the entity and the region, with the construction of the 2 combined cycle power plants, the expansion of the natural gas network, the work at the Port of Progreso, the Ie-Tram and the Mayan Train.

“In the southeast, we are working hand in hand to improve the conditions of our states; from Yucatan, we will continue to do our bit so that Mexico can do better,” he said in the presence of the head of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), Rogelio Ramirez de la O., and the Mayor of Merida, Renan Barrera Concha.

Finally, the Governor indicated that Yucatán is working as a team to achieve better results, which is why it is determined to take advantage of nearshoring, which has resulted in Yucatán being the third state that has promoted and known how to take advantage of this process, only behind Nuevo León and Coahuila, to the north.

In turn, Mr. López Obrador called to continue promoting the country’s progress and to continue advancing towards a fairer Mexico, for everyone; he also reaffirmed that his administration will continue to ensure that every Mexican has opportunities for their development.

During this event, the ABM recognized Yucatecans Minona Chapur Dajer, Miriam Peraza Rivero, Pablo Baas Tuyub and Juan Manuel Estrada Balam, for being exemplary Mexicans, as well as an inspiration to others.

This convention is the most important in the field at the national level, whose objectives are to strengthen the channels of dialogue between the banking sector and the Government and to propose effective solutions to current problems; in its 2023 version, it will address relevant topics on the future of these services, which will set the trend for the coming years.

After almost 2 decades, this activity leaves its traditional venue in Acapulco, Guerrero, to be held on March 16 and 17 in Merida, where representatives of the 49 members of the ABM will meet with leaders, authorities and supervisors of the sector from all over the Republic.

As a result of the Governor’s efforts, Yucatan became the venue for this meeting in which more than 3,300 industry players, including leaders and representatives of the financial system’s governing bodies, such as the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Mexico, will participate in person and virtually.
