The Zodiac killings, also known as the Zodiac murders or simply the Zodiac, were a series of unsolved murders that occurred in Northern California during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The killer, who called himself “Zodiac,” claimed responsibility for at least five murders and two attempted murders, but is believed to have committed as many as 37 killings. The case remains one of the most infamous and intriguing unsolved mysteries in American history.

The Zodiac first struck on December 20, 1968, when two teenagers, David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen, were shot to death while parked on a lover’s lane in Benicia, California. On July 4, 1969, another couple, Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau, were shot while sitting in their car at a park in Vallejo, California. Ferrin died from her wounds, but Mageau survived and was able to provide a description of the attacker.

On July 31, 1969, a letter claiming responsibility for the murders was sent to three newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area. The letter was signed “Zodiac” and included a cryptogram that the killer claimed would reveal his identity. The cryptogram was eventually solved by a schoolteacher and amateur codebreaker, but the message provided no useful information about the killer.

Over the next few years, the Zodiac sent numerous letters to newspapers, taunting the police and providing clues to his identity. He also claimed responsibility for several other murders, but some of his claims were later proven to be false. The Zodiac was known for his distinctive symbol, which he included in his letters and on the scenes of his crimes. The symbol consisted of a circle with a cross through it and a dot in the center.

Despite an intensive investigation by law enforcement, the Zodiac was never caught. The case generated a great deal of public interest and many suspects were investigated, but no one was ever charged with the crimes. In 2007, the San Francisco Police Department announced that they had obtained a DNA sample from a stamp on one of the Zodiac’s letters, but no match has been found in the DNA databases.

The Zodiac killings have inspired numerous books, movies, and TV shows. Many theories about the identity of the killer have been proposed, but the case remains unsolved. The killer’s true identity and motives may never be known, but the legacy of the Zodiac continues to fascinate and haunt those who study the case.
