In the course of this week, members of the National Coordination of Restoration and Conservation will arrive to work on the second stage of the survey of the damage to the José Peón Contreras Theater, as a result of the fire that occurred on November 1, 2022, informed the director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) – Yucatán, José Arturo Chab Cárdenas.
He also revealed that 90 % of the material that fell from the dome of the building has been recovered, which will allow the total recovery of the “Las Musas” mural.
He commented that this week the specialists will come from Mexico City, as part of the expertise that is being carried out.
He pointed out that once they have the respective verdict, the work of rescuing and restoring the Theater will begin.
“The INAH-Yucatán Center is working together with the state government to open the next stages of the building,” he said during the interview.
He commented that before the end of the month, the galleries would be open to the public, “being still in time and form“.
He recalled that the head of the Secretariat of Culture and the Arts of Yucatán (Sedeculta), Loreto Villanueva Trujillo, reported that this month the galleries of the Peón Contreras would be reactivated, to give life back to the precinct, after the Civil Protection of Yucatán ruled that there was no damage in those areas.
Chab Cárdenas commented that “Civil Protection gave a report that there is no structural or other type of damage in the galleries, they are fine, we will only clean them and in a short time we will reactivate them again, we will try to open them in March to bring the theater back to life”.
He emphasized the progress in the recovery of the building, so work is being done on the structural mechanics, as indicated by INAH.
There is also a team of structural engineers working on the dome, and personnel from the Ministry of Public Works are also working on the recovery of the boxes.
He added that the building has two insurances for being historical and artistic, one is from the federation and the other from the State, in which both are holding meetings with INAH to know the amounts to be used.
