The Cooperativa de Moluscos del Mayab, the group in charge of operating the octopus farm located in Sisal in conjunction with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), indicated that it is unaware of the demand for the cessation of operations of its industry, recently issued by the Aquatic Animal Alliance.
The group, which encompasses more than 100 international organizations focused on improving aquatic animal welfare conditions, issued a report urging UNAM to cease octopus farming operations at the Yucatan farm.
The concern about the octopus farm is due to the negative impact it may have on animal welfare, biodiversity, biosecurity, environmental degradation, antibiotic resistance, public health and the livelihoods of coastal communities.
This is due to the fact that the mortality rate in the octopus farm in Yucatan is an alarming 52 percent, in addition to representing other potential threats, such as the transmission of pathogens to the surrounding coastal ecosystem and additional damage to the wild octopus population in the region.
Adriano Cob, legal representative of the Cooperativa de Moluscos del Mayab, indicated that they are not aware of the call to halt their operations, nor have they received any notification or publication against their work.
