March 21: Why will there be an extra day of rest?

Mexico’s Education authorities will give preschool, elementary, and high school students an extra day of vacation before the arrival of the Semana Santa.

The arrival of spring is approaching and, with it, yet another long weekend vacation that students and workers will be able to enjoy. In addition, preschool, elementary and high school students will be able to enjoy an extra day of rest on these dates.

Next Monday, March 20 is a mandatory day of rest, according to the Federal Labor Law, in commemoration of Tuesday, March 21, which commemorates the birth of Benito Juarez.

What other day will be a mandatory day off?

The Ministry of Public Education states that next Friday, March 17, preschool, elementary and high school students will not have classes, since the calendar for the 2022-2023 school year states that on this date there will be administrative unloading.

What happens if I have to work on March 20?

If for any reason any person is forced to work on March 20, 2023, there is good news, as they will receive an extra amount in their normal salary.

According to the Federal Labor Law, on January 20 they will have to receive the normal daily pay plus double.

“The workers will be obligated to provide the services and will have the right to be paid, independently of the salary that corresponds to them for the mandatory rest, a double salary for the service provided,” states Article 75 of the Federal Labor Law.

What days of mandatory rest and long weekends remain for 2023 in Mexico

According to the Federal Labor Law, these will be the holidays for workers in Mexico:

May 1: It will be Monday, so there will be a long weekend that weekend.
September 16: Although the date falls on a Saturday, it is a mandatory vacation, and if you have to work, you must be paid double.
November 20: It will be the third Monday of November and corresponds to the commemoration of the Mexican Revolution.
December 25: It will be a Monday, so you will have a long weekend.
