Forest fire consumes 30 hectares of forest in Yucatán

The National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) informed that the first forest fire was registered in the state, which consumed 30 hectares.

According to national statistics, the agency indicated that this year 1,121 forest fires were detected and controlled throughout the country, with the exception of Baja California, Baja California Sur and Campeche.

Of the entire country, the most affected state was Chihuahua, with 3,485.12 hectares, followed by Jalisco, with 3,441.55 and Guerrero, with 3,256, in contrast is Querétaro with 10, Nuevo León with 12.36, Quintana Roo with 16.16 hectares and Yucatán with 31.39 hectares.

Enrique Alcocer Basto, head of Civil Protection in Yucatan, informed that the season began with intense activity, since in the first week nearly 200 incident reports were received.

The agency indicated that most of the reports corresponded to outbreaks, burning of garbage or brush or grass on highways, in other words, cases that are part of a typical season with no major effects.

Fires on the Merida-Campeche highway

Forest fire consumes 30 hectares of forest in Yucatán, the fire burned several hectares of undergrowth.
Approximately 160 hectares of undergrowth were consumed by a fire at kilometer 17 of the Merida-Campeche highway as a result of inconsistent burning by residents which got out of control.

Due to the magnitude of the fire, the support of Civil Protection, the National Guard, the Red Cross and the Mexican Army was required to control the incident.
