Given the increase of foreign citizens residing in Yucatan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) began granting a new service related to obtaining Mexican Naturalization papers, so this state will be the only one in the southeast of the country to perform such a procedure.

The head of the SRE, Mariana Cruz Pool, stated that “a new service that we are granting is the naturalization service, it is a procedure aimed at foreigners who want to become naturalized Mexicans, they can do it here in Yucatan, we are now one of the four offices nationwide that are performing this procedure.

In the Southeast of the country, we are the only office, and we are practically starting with these procedures and we are providing attention and service in the Southeast, which was not available before”.

In this context, it should be noted that based on the 2020 Population and Housing Census conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), there are 15,405 foreigners living in Yucatan, most of them from the United States, Guatemala, Japan, Spain, France, Canada, Colombia and Cuba.

In an interview, Mariana Cruz said that on average they attend to 10 naturalization-related procedures per day, and that this service is provided through appointments.

“In the appointments, the documentation is handed in, the validation, if necessary, depending on the type of naturalization procedure, a test on the culture and history of Mexico is applied, a Spanish evaluation, and if they manage to pass these tests, the process begins. We are attending from all over the world, but the most crowded are citizens from Cuba, Venezuela, Lebanon, they are arriving from all over the world”.

On this subject, the head of Foreign Affairs in this entity recalled that the process for the granting of passports since April of last year is carried out from Monday to Sunday at the headquarters located in a shopping center located in Periferico Norte.

“I invite the society to process their passport, remember that this document is a travel identity document, it is useful to be able to go to another country, and also to identify ourselves, in the case of minors it is a document that can be obtained from the first day of birth, the Mexican passport is one of the safest in the world, and allows entry to more than 130 countries”, stated Mariana Cruz.
