Merida, Yucatan, March 14, 2023 . – In the middle of shouting, arguments with motorists and leaving a vehicular chaos, students from two universities located on the Merida-Tetiz road, blocked Jacinto Canek Avenue for 2 hours in protest against the fire in Merida’s landfill.
Around 6:00 p.m., about 50 people, including students from the Universidad Politécnica de Yucatán (UPY) and the Escuela Nacional de Estudios Superiores (ENES), as well as some residents of Chalmuch, decided to close both lanes of the road.
This caused damage to hundreds of people leaving their jobs and heading home, generating vehicular chaos as vehicles, trucks, and public transportation vans were unable to circulate.

This caused the annoyance of citizens who reproached the action. Verbal confrontations were even generated, as well as a brawl between the demonstrators and those affected.
However, the blockade continued and agents of the Public Safety Secretariat were given the task of diverting traffic to alternate streets to avoid any incidents.
The reason for the protest was to request the corresponding authorities to act and extinguish the fire at the landfill located in Chalmuch.
