PROGRESO March 18th.- A 20-foot pleasure boat with several people on board who were out for a stroll, was wrecked off the coast of this port near the remote terminal, a swell caused by the strong waves and winds caused it to capsize and sink with all the crew. Reports are that 11 people were on board.
The boat sank and sank, the passengers were wearing life jackets and that saved them from drowning. They were found by the yacht “Regazza” which was returning to its base in Yucalpetén and rescued them. All the passengers were in the water and only the stern of the boat was sticking out of the water.
Rescue of the castaways
The shipwreck occurred between 13:30 hours and two o’clock in the afternoon. Through the radio, pleasure boats and fishing boats picked up the distress report from the yacht that found the castaways.
The reports received at the port were “a yacht sank off Isla Cervera with 11 people on board, but they have already been rescued by a yacht and also boats from the Mexican Navy and firefighters have already left for the rescue”.
It was also commented on the radio that it was imprudent that 11 people, young and underage, had left in a small boat, but fortunately they had life jackets and this prevented a tragedy on the high seas, which should be a call of attention and alert of what can happen during the Easter vacations.
The crew of the “Regazza”, a large pleasure boat, was the one who reported the case, a signal that was picked up by the tourist marinas and yacht owners and immediately communicated it to the naval base of the XIII Naval Zone of Yucalpeten and also to 911.
The Navy, through the Naval Search and Rescue Station, immediately sent a Defender type boat, also a firefighter patrol boat sailed to support the rescue and transfer of the castaways to the port, which were already on board the “Regazza”, which entered Yucalpeten before three o’clock in the afternoon escorted by the naval and firefighter boats.
The “Regazza” was transferred to the facilities of the XIII Naval Zone where the castaways were disembarked to receive medical attention. The boat was sunk near the remote terminal and would later be rescued.
Cold front alert
The shipwrecked boat drifted away from the coast on a day when the threat of the 41st cold front had already been alerted. Shortly after noon winds from the northeast blew, swells increased and a heavy downpour fell, the bad weather would have been the cause of the shipwreck.
