The Archdiocese of Yucatán does not have a budget for the maintenance and restoration of the Cathedral of San Idelfonso, so in order to repair the walls of the church after the march of 8M they must wait for the report of the experts of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) Yucatán to know the magnitude of the damage, how it will be repaired and how much it will cost.

The coordinator of the Pastoral of Communication of the Archdiocese of Yucatán, Jorge Martínez Ruz, said that the extent and seriousness of the damage caused by the demonstrators cannot yet be determined until the general diagnosis of the state of the various monuments in Mérida is completed by INAH specialists. They will be the ones who will diagnose and determine if there is any general damage and how to correct it.

“The nation oversees and provides maintenance of the monuments and historic temples, by giving the Archdiocese the administration of the Cathedral, we must take care of its maintenance, but we do not have a budget for maintenance. The usual one is obtained with the help of benefactors and people of goodwill, but mishaps like the one last night are not programmed and there are no resources to be able to face it”, he indicated.

The priest Jorge Martinez said that, independently of the damages and the cost of repairing and restoring them, the Archdiocese of Yucatan does not have a budget to do the work, so they will have to get them and they will have to turn to the Government for this support.

He specified that, as the church of Yucatan, they have a position regarding these events, “what we do is to respond as the church usually does, that is to say, they call for prayer”. Archbishop Gustavo Rodriguez Vega, together with the other bishops and with the whole archdiocesan church, makes a call to prayer and an act of atonement.

“An act to ask forgiveness for the offenses committed, which will be through the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament that will be held in the Cathedral, presided by the Archbishop, but also in all the parishes of Yucatan, it will be held on upcoming dates that we will make known. To ask forgiveness for all the faults, for all the violence that exists in the country against women, men, and vulnerable people,” he said.

He added that the prayer is against abuses, extortions, injustices in general, corruption, and bad situations that occur in Mexico and our communities.
