In the past few days, Angelina Jolie was in the Yucatan Peninsula, specifically in Akumal, Quintana Roo, as part of the efforts of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) program “Women for the Bees”, which she is an ambassador.
According to a video posted on the Twitter account of the Guerlain cosmetics company, sponsor of the project; Angelina spent time with Mayan women who received training from the program for the care and promotion of the Melipona bee.
“I recently traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and met the inspiring Mayan women of this region who are helping to preserve the world’s smallest and oldest bee, the Mayan beecheii melipona beecheii.” Jolie is heard narrating in the video.
As part of her work as an ambassador for the United Nations project, Angelina Jolie visited the Mayan jungle of Quintana Roo to learn more about the Melipona bee, and at the same time promote, actions in favor of this species that the Selva Maya Foundation is carrying out in the area.
The pictures show Angelina Jolie dressed in the traditional huipil and spending time with the Mayan women of the community, as well as with the children. She also tasted the honey produced by the Melipona bees.
What is the Women for Bees program?
Between 2020 and 2021, Unesco and Guerlain are launching the “Women for Bees” women’s beekeeping entrepreneurship program in the organization’s designated biosphere reserves around the world with the support of the French Observatory of Apidology (OFA) training center.
This program, whose godmother and ambassador is actress Angelina Jolie, helps to promote the dual objective of female empowerment and biodiversity conservation.
