Australian authorities confiscated a shipment of 2.4 tons of cocaine, with a value of more than 670 billion dollars, off the coast of Western Australia.
In a statement on social networks on Saturday, the Western Australian Police Force detailed that following an undercover operation, 12 people were also seized, allegedly linked to a Mexican cartel, whose name was not specified.
The investigation, dubbed Operation Beech, was a joint effort between the Transnational Police Force Transnational and Organized Crime Squad (TSOC), the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Sydney Office (DEA), with the assistance of other state police jurisdictions.
According to details, the operation began in November 2022 after 2.4 tons of cocaine destined for Australia were intercepted by the Drug Enforcement Administration in Sydney.
“This gave Western Australian police the opportunity to replace the cargo using an inert substance and packaging identical to that used by the cartel,” and thus track down those involved in trafficking the seized cocaine shipment,” the press release noted.
