No more permits for street markets (Tianguis) in Merida

Ignacio Gutiérrez Solís, Director of Government of the Mérida City Hall, informed that during this Christmas season no permits will be authorized for the establishment of new tianguis in subdivisions, neighborhoods or residential zones, as this will tend to increase street vending and improvised markets in parks and on the outskirts of the city.

In an interview, he pointed out that the tianguis that already had permits and that were reactivated, after the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, will continue working normally and some vendors will only change their line of business during this season.

“After the economic reactivation in the State, the tianguis that already had permits were established again, since March, the largest ones opened and little by little the ones that were pending have been opening, but they do not intend to open more,” he said.

He emphasized that in Merida there are 62 active places that operate as tianguis throughout the year, so they will be the only ones whose permits will be renewed to operate this December.

“No more concessions for this type will be granted during this December season,” he said.

Gutiérrez Solís indicated that they are working with the tianguistas on the issue of cleanliness and care of public spaces, “because when they are used, a significant accumulation of garbage is generated, so the tianguistas are asked to leave these sites clean“.

He commented that these merchants must comply with the norms of the municipality, otherwise they could be banned from using public spaces “because they are used by families, children and athletes and must be in optimal conditions“.
