As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the Coro de la Ciudad de Mérida is preparing a Christmas concert to be enjoyed by the public free of charge at the Centro Cultural Olimpo on December 14, said the group’s director, Nidia Góngora Cervera.

About “Coro de la Ciudad de Mérida

The Coro de la Ciudad is a group that emerged 25 years ago, through which many people who have been interested in choral music have passed and during its course, have become professionalized to be part of other groups.

Who founded this group?

It was formed by maestro Jorge Medina when he was at the School of Choral Music and he appointed maestro Néstor Rodríguez as assistant director, but when this institution disappeared, so did the group, because it was intended for people with a choral conducting career.

Did you rescue it?

I could not allow this group, to which I belonged during my professional artistic training process, to disappear, so it took about a year before my husband, Juan Villegas and I decided to take the reins and form it again.

Did the same members return?

We are talking about more than 20 years ago when there was no Whatsapp and not all of us had cell phones, so many contacts fell off our radar and since my daughters sang, my sister and my brother-in-law also, we did the family project, we presented it to the city council and they accepted it.

How many people are in the group and what are their voices?

We are currently 25 people who make up the choir, between people who have several years and other very new, with different voices such as altos, sopranos, tenors, a bass and so we have passed.

What does singing mean to you?

Singing is the most beautiful thing there can be, it is a way in which the vibrations of our being make healing happen, both for the listener and for the performer, I have always had that idea, the one who sings is happy.

How will you celebrate these 25 years?

We are going to close the year with the last concert entitled “De qué color es el tiempo“, which will feature a program of pure Christmas music, music from France, Spain, Germany, Mexico, we are trying to make it a multicultural program.

When and where will it take place?

The concert will take place next Wednesday, December 14 at 8 p.m. at the “Silvio Zavala Vallado” Auditorium of the Olimpo Cultural Center, which will be free of charge for the enjoyment of the public, so we hope you will join us there.
