Mérida, Yucatán, (January 7, 2022) .- The hotel sector affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce of Mérida has notified cancellations due to the advance of the Omicron strain. Iván Rodríguez Gasque, president of Canacome pointed out that the variant of the Sars-Cov-2 virus is affecting the conditions of the tourism sector.
Rodríguez Gasque pointed out that, although the first fortnight of last December in Yucatan there were very low numbers of infections and hospitalizations, the second half of the month was noticeably higher, which is now being reflected with significant data with this new strain of the virus.
January is very uncertain, he argued, the salary increases will serve for the economic recovery of families, but the advance of the new variant of Covid and inflation are causing a condition of great uncertainty to arise.
He stressed that one of the most pressing conditions will be to establish the return to classes, since the increase in infections could stop the return to presence, which was scheduled for January 17 for the different educational levels. It would be prudent to wait to know the development of the contagions and to define if the return to face-to-face classes could occur in February, he argued.
At this time, 95 percent of the companies have returned to face-to-face work, only the companies that have defined some specific areas maintain the hybrid process; The problem is that, if children do not return to classes, working parents have to establish more complicated mechanisms for their children to continue in virtual classes, without their presence, he mentioned.
