Yucatan registers its first femicide of the year

The Ministry of Public Security and the State Attorney General’s Office confirmed what would be the first femicide of the year in Yucatan, registered in the municipality of Progreso.

MERIDA, YUC. | SSP On Saturday, Jan, 15th, a double homicide was reported in the Flamboyanes subdivision, in Progreso, where a woman and a man were murdered.


After following up on the facts and the evidence collected, the person allegedly responsible for both murders was identified, and one of these crimes was classified as femicide.

Although the alleged perpetrator was arrested on January 15th, it was not until the 17th that the operation was made public, apparently while waiting for an arrest warrant to be issued by a Control Judge.

The alleged culprit is charged with the crimes of aggravated femicide against his wife, as well as qualified homicide against the other victim.

According to the study Femicide Violence in Yucatan, which takes into account data from 2008 to 2021, at least 79 women were victims of femicide and, with this fact, the first of 2022, it would already be 80 events in 14 years.

On the other hand, Adelaida Salas Salazar, representative of the National Citizen Observatory of Femicide in Yucatan, recalled that 2021 closed with 13 femicides.
