Mérida, Yucatán, (January 8, 2022) .- The southeast of the country could have an aerospace sector cluster and contribute to Mexico’s participation in the Artemisa program, said the Director-General of the Mexican Space Agency (AEM), Salvador Landeros Ayala, in the Fourth Plenary Session of Associates of the Mexican Federation of the Aerospace Industry (Femia), held in Mérida.
He stressed that it is necessary to take advantage of all the experiences and strengthen this branch in the region, and Yucatan has many elements to achieve it.
He also said that the United States Government invited Mexico to the aforementioned initiative of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to return to the Moon in 2025 and constitute a lunar station, preparing mankind for future trips to Mars.
“Taking advantage of the aeronautical industry, we can venture into the space, in the construction of satellites, in the development of technologies, in space medicine, in Earth observation applications to improve agricultural productivity, for natural disasters, in security and surveillance, oceanography, cartography, exploitation of natural resources … There are many opportunities, ” Landeros Ayala said.
Later, he assured that the Republic has a significant number of firms in this segment and the southeast has what it takes to host a cluster, as it exists in different regions of the country, among which Querétaro, Chihuahua, Baja California or Nuevo León stand out.
“The aeronautical industry is very mature, it has strengthened in a short time and has risen to top-level positions. You have to take advantage of it because it is a natural step into the space industry; there are several companies that have the potential, the vocation, and the capacity to get involved ”, he added.
He stated that the Artemisa program “is a historical reason for a radical change in humanity because a program of these characteristics represents greater cooperation between countries; currently, there are 14 countries, including Mexico. So, it is a great opportunity, because it represents accelerating technological development ad science in our country, in various spatial issues ”, Landeros Ayala explained.
He added that “cooperation between the industry, such as Femia, the local universities, the government, and society, in the different states of the country, will be combined, and Yucatan plays a very important role for these purposes, due to its historical situation, from the Mayas, who contributed so much to the development of astronomy, to the exploration of space and to strengthen this type of projects that are on the last frontier of knowledge ”.
Likewise, he emphasized the importance of planning the activities to be carried out and taking advantage of both the potential and the talent of Mexican youth. “Yucatan has everything, its geographical location, its people, its history, its culture, its universities, and it is very important to take advantage of these opportunities,” Landeros Ayala concluded.
