Cancun, Quintana Roo, (January 11, 2022).- Despite the fact that as of this Monday the state of Quintana Roo went back to yellow at the epidemiological traffic light, hotel occupancy in southern destinations such as Mahahual and Bacalar remains quite positive.

According to the report of the Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, the Grand Costa Maya, which includes Mahahual, Bacalar, and Chetumal, remains with numbers above 50% occupancy.

” Hopefully things do not get worse in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic because that is going to hurt us a lot. At the moment we maintain good occupancy in the hotels of Mahahual and Bacalar mainly, despite the things that have affected us in recent days “, said Bertha Medina Núñez de Cáceres, president of the Association of Hotels of the Center and South of Quintana Roo.

This weekend, the announcement of the decline in the state epidemiological traffic light was joined by the affectation by the cold front that affects a large part of the state, this caused that this Saturday there was a drop in temperature and heavy rains, which scared away beach vacationers.

However, tourists keep visiting these tourist poles in the south of the state, without reaching the numbers that other places in the north such as Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, and the Riviera Maya have.

And according to the report of the state Tourism instance, Cancun has 71% hotel occupancy, the Riviera Maya has 73.7%, Cozumel 67.6%, Isla Mujeres exceeds 82% and, with 49.5% it is the Grand Costa Maya.

According to what the hotel businessmen of the south have declared, for this year there were high expectations, taking into account the good times of occupancy that occurred at the end of 2021, so the hope of being able to feel a true economic recovery grew.

However, 2022 has started with these types of complications, both epidemiological and climatological, of which they will seek to resist and keep up with the good number of visitors.
