Mexico sweeps in and takes first place in omicron cases

The country displaces Chile in cases of Omicron; AMLO insists that there is no need to be alarmed

The advance of Omicron continues rampant in Mexico, which has already become the Latin American country with the most cases of this variant of Covid-19, according to the most recent data from the Global Initiative for Sharing All Influenza Data (Gisaid).

Mexico has accumulated 374 cases of Omicron, when the first case was detected on December 3, a month ago.

The “Latinus” portal recalls that until yesterday Chile was in the first place of cases, with 327, followed by Brazil with 218, being these three countries the most affected by this variant.

However, today, Tuesday, Mexico is already in first place with 374 cases, the most recent in Coahuila and Jalisco, where no cases of Omicron had been reported before.

The government of Coahuila confirmed the first three cases of the Omicron variant detected in a private hospital in Torreon.

The infected are isolated and under epidemiological surveillance.

In Jalisco, Governor Enrique Alfaro announced the detection of the first 16 cases of the Omicron variant, of which at least two have a history of travel to the United States.

As of yesterday, Mexico has accumulated 3,993,464 cases and 299,581 deaths due to Covid-19, according to the most recent data from the Ministry of Health.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged yesterday that Covid-19 infections associated with Omicron are on the rise.

However, he reiterated that hospitalizations remain at the same levels because the variant does not have the severity of other Covid strains.

In his morning address today, AMLO assured that there are no signs of a fourth wave of the coronavirus and called on the population not to be alarmed by Ómicron.

Asked if there are already signs of a fourth wave of Covid in Mexico, he answered that “I would not say that”.

“We have to wait because what we are seeing is that we have no hospitalizations,” he replied.
