The delegation of the European Union in Mexico, as well as the embassies of Norway and Switzerland, questioned the lack of results in the open investigations to clarify the murders of journalists in Mexican territory.
(MEXICO – EU), January 21, 2022.- The European Union, Norway and Switzerland condemned the murders of journalists José Luis Gamboa Arenas and Alfonso Margarito Martínez Esquivel, which occurred on January 10 in Veracruz and on January 17 in Tijuana, Baja California, respectively.
“We reiterate our call to the competent Mexican authorities to deploy all possible efforts and carry out prompt and transparent investigations, in order to identify and prosecute those responsible, so that there are no zones of silence where no journalist dares to work. “, the diplomatic representations spread through a statement.
Gamboa Arenas was a director of the regional media, Inforegio, and Martínez Esquivel worked as a photojournalist for security issues, in different international media.
The diplomatic representations expressed condolences and deep solidarity with the families and friends of the victims.
“Although a clear link between the murders and the journalistic work of both has not yet been established, the events that occurred in a week demonstrate, once again, the worrying degree of violence and intimidation that many journalists in Mexico face.
“We regret that the year 2022 begins with two murders of journalists after at least 9 were murdered in 2021 ,” they expressed through the statement.
The European Union, Norway and Switzerland described the number of attacks against journalists in Mexico as alarming. They urged all the competent authorities to make use of all the means at their disposal, to guarantee the protection of journalists in Mexican territory, and prevent impunity from covering the murders of Mr. Gamboa Arenas and Mr. Martínez Esquivel.
