Cases of depression on the rise in the Yucatan (SINAVE)

Yucatan had an increase in cases of depression last year, according to a report from the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave).

MÉRIDA, Yucatan, (January 15, 2022).- The report from the federal health agency stated that 2021 closed with 1,651 cases of this condition, a figure that exceeds the 961 from the previous year, by 71.8%.

Of the total number of registered cases, 430 are men and 1,221 are women, that is, this sector is the most affected by the depression, based on the figures reported by Sinave.

It is worth mentioning that depression is defined as a mental disorder that is characterized by the presence of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or lack of self-esteem, sleep or appetite disorders, a feeling of tiredness and lack of concentration that lasts longer of 15 days and is not associated with mourning processes.

According to the psychologist at the ISSSTE Mérida Hospital Clinic, Nelly Morales Murguia, pointed out that this public health problem has seriously affected, which has worsened markedly throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

“A predominant aspect is a state of isolation since there is no social contact that produces relaxation through emotional discharges, people get stressed and often feel sad because they are not hugging or do not have the same contact with someone in particular, many are not comforted by a family member or friend due to the pandemic,” she said.

She pointed out that more than 25% of the people who attend psychological consultation suffer from depression and for which she assured that it is essential to promote mental health and attend to those who present alterations.

She stressed that it is important to exercise, take care of the diet so that the person has a physical, emotional well-being and this is reflected in a better quality, as well as for their families.
