Merida, Yucatan, (December 17, 2021).- At a time when cases of gender violence and femicides have increased, on Saturday, December 18, a Course-Workshop on Urban Self-Defense for Women will be given, at the Braki Dojang in Francisco de Montejo neighborhood (Calle 50 between 61 and 67 No. 309, Upper floor, Paseos del Conquistador, 97200 Mérida), led by Professor Jorge Braga Cabrera, a specialist in Hapkido, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts.
The training will be aimed at interested parties of all ages, with a capacity limited to 18 attendees due to the issue of the pandemic. The day will start at 4:00 p.m., although if the limit of members is exceeded, a second session will be scheduled.
“There has always been the situation of the preparation of personal defense, but we will do it in an integral, unconventional way, not only the technical part but also the mental part. Many relate it only to martial arts techniques, but they are not addressing personal defense as such, unforeseen attacks or unexpected moments, ” said Braga Cabrera.
“An attacker is not going to come straight ahead and hit you, he will look for a blind spot, have the opportunity to hunt his prey, so we are going to provide practical self-defense training.
The objective of this project is that the Yucatecan women have the tools to act in the event of being victims of any aggression.
“There is a substantial increase in attacks on women, in general, there are records of violence at all levels, but especially in the gender issue, it increased even more with the pandemic and continues to rise,” he said.
The instructor recalled that historically the man has been classified as the part that should be the protector of women.
The course will cover different topics, with an established methodology so that women can adapt to circumstances. In fact, later a second part of the workshop will be organized, with more advanced problems such as facing more than one person or different procedures to escape.
“This time we are going to work on the situations, grant the tools of defense and immediate counterattack, that there is effectiveness, it is a program of defense, progression, and completion of those actions. Then the application according to the scenarios, that there is an offensive plan, finally there is the question of dominance, ” he said.
