Merida airport increases the number of flights for the Christmas holidays

MÉRIDA, Yucatan, (December 18, 2021).- The end of the year holiday season is already “in the air” at the Mérida airport, where extra flights have been scheduled on national and international routes. Airport authorities estimated that in the coming days there will be a 25 percent increase in the number of passengers, compared to the same period in 2020

In this way, until December 31, American Airlines will operate an extra flight to Miami and, shortly, one more to Dallas, Texas, also this weekend the route to Havana, Cuba will be reopened, while Aeromexico increased one flight more on the route to Mexico City, informed the regional director of the Airports of the Southeast group, Héctor Navarrete Muñoz.

It was also reported that this weekend a flight to Havana, Cuba begins to operate at the Mérida airport, but no further details of the number or frequency were provided. It is speculated that it would be operated by Viva Aerobus or United Airlines.

He also reported that as of this week Aeroméxico began operating flight 822, from Monday to Friday, arriving at 9:30 a.m. and returning as 825 to Mexico City, at 10:20 a.m., with 737 Max equipment. , with a capacity of 120 passengers, operations that will allow responding to the demand for airplane seats in the holiday season, which is the most important of the year.

Currently, the Mérida airport carries out 125 daily operations, including commercial, cargo, and private flights. However, the figures for its operations in the year will be released later because the company is listed on the Stock Exchange and cannot be provided earlier.

The destinations with the highest demand at the national level are Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara, while abroad are Miami and Houston.

The airport official announced that Asur is working on the opening of more destinations or routes together with the National and State Tourism Secretariat, which is why expansion works are being carried out at the terminal.

He thanked the staff working at the airport because they have not stopped working, despite the pandemic, and indicated that until now there are no restrictions for the arrival of national and foreign tourists, because there are health protocols to detect people who show symptoms of the disease, he even recalled that it was the first terminal in the entire country to implement the security and prevention protocols against the coronavirus, which have been updated.
