Man sentenced to 6 years in prison for abusing a minor in Merida

MÉRIDA, Yucatán (December 16, 2021).- The First Oral Trial Court sentenced Christian “N” to six years in prison when it found him responsible for groping a minor student, events that occurred in September 2019 on a street in the Jardines de Mulsay subdivision, in the west of Mérida.

The members of the First Oral Trial Court, Fabiola Rodríguez Zurita, Niger Desiderio Pool Cab, and Nidia Celis Fuentes, unanimously handed down the conviction for the crime of sexual abuse.

In the hearing held at the Mérida Justice Center, the defendant was also sentenced to pay a fine of 25 thousand 347 pesos.

He was sentenced to pay compensation for non-pecuniary damage in favor of the direct victim, in the amount of four thousand pesos and he was prohibited from approaching the minor or her home within a range of 200 meters for a period of three years, same that will begin from the moment the accused regains his freedom.

The criminal case establishes that the events took place on September 23, 2019, at approximately 2:00 p.m., when the victim, who is a student and a minor, was walking on Calle 114th between 67-a and 65 of the Jardines de Mulsay subdivision of this city of Mérida.

Suddenly, the accused approached her from behind and put one of his hands under the victim’s uniform skirt to grope her and then tried to flee, but the teenager grabbed him by the back of his shirt while asking for help, and with some help from other citizens, managed to hold him until the police arrived.
