In the last 20 years, Campeche has lost about 760 thousand hectares, so the federation will implement a project for reforestation
Campeche, (December 28, 2021).- They will create the 22 thousand hectare forest corridor between the communities of the Miguel Colorado, 5 de Febrero, Pixoyal, and Xbacab ejidos, located in Champotón.
The decision was taken given the problems of deforestation and illegal logging in Campeche, which are linked to the loss of 760 thousand hectares of forest massif during the last 20 years, according to Global Forest Watch. This was highlighted by the head of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), María Albores González, in collaboration with the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), on their social networks.
The forest corridor barely represents 2.89 percent of what has been lost in the last 20 years, as well as 57.89 percent of what is lost per year in Campeche: 38 thousand hectares.
The federal project of the forest corridor contemplates, through the Payment for Environmental Services program, that the four mentioned ejidos could take charge of the care and conservation of 22 thousand hectares, as well as the promotion of environmentally responsible communal practices.
In Campeche they will have the participation of the communities of the Miguel Colorado, 5 de Febrero, Pixoyal, and Xbacab ejidos; located in Champotón; where they seek to conserve the natural forest wealth of these spaces.
The initiative also occurs in the midst of the achievements obtained with the federal program Sowing Life, which until the end of July 2021 planted 15 million 410 thousand new trees in the State, to reach a total of 27 million 900 thousand plants in the state according to the Ministry of Welfare of the Federal Government.
During the past week, Albores González visited the ejidos to deliver awards to the inhabitants of the area for their participation in the training on rights and obligations of the operating rules of the program “Supports for Sustainable Forest Development of Conafor”.
In the area of Miguel Colorado, there is a lagoon, two cenotes, and the cave of the bats, as well as eight thousand hectares destined voluntarily for conservation, as well as the ejido 5 de Febrero; Furthermore, in Pixoyal there are 5,000 hectares registered in this scheme and in Xbacab, 1,000 hectares. During each year, the mentioned ejidos will receive, together, a sum of 13 million pesos to preserve and care for these spaces, as it will be the first forest corridor in which the communities participate.
