The celebration will take place from January 5 to 24; all events require tickets

Merida, Yucatan, (December 29, 2021).- With 18 days of artistic and cultural shows, the city council will celebrate the anniversary of the city with the Mérida Fest. The event will take place from January 5 to 24 and attendees will be able to enjoy “a recharged festival” in which theatrical plays, circus shows, dance, music, cinema, literature, visual arts, children’s shows, gastronomy, academic colloquium, and digital projects will converge.

Irving Berlin Villafaña, director of Culture of the Merida municipal government, reported at a press conference that the 480th anniversary of the Yucatecan capital will start with ‘Las mañanitas‘ in January 5 in the Plaza Grande. This year, he warned, it will be without the traditional “callejoneada” due to the pandemic, and the capacity will be limited to 400 people.

They will begin by listening to the songs of the winning trios of the Yucatecan composition and interpretation contest that was held this year and will end with the troubadours of the Plaza Grande, one of the most important living traditions in the city.

After the council session on January 6, they will open with a concert by Juan Pablo Manzanero and Colombian musicians.

To access the events it is necessary to purchase tickets at Tuboletos.mx

“We are committed to facilitating new productions. Works that are presented for the first time and that throughout the year will be our contribution to the production of the arts. There will be premieres of music, dance, theater; new books to read and new authors to reward, “said the municipal official.

The mayor of Mérida, Renán Barrera Concha, mentioned that the festival is an opportunity to reflect on this trajectory and regain, step by step, the public space that had been lost during the months of confinement.

“The Mérida Fest 2022 is recharged. I asked the director of culture and his team to have a responsible, prudent party, respectful of health protocols, with an emphasis on the local artistic community, which has been badly hit by the pandemic, ” he said.

The councilor informed that the programming is directed to all the inhabitants of Merida, but also to those who visit it. At this time of year, he added, many national and international visitors make Mérida their destination.

“The Mérida Fest is international because it is aimed at everyone, everyone who knows how to value artistic expressions. However, I ask the people to please keep a healthy distance and follow the health protocols”, reiterated Barrera Concha.

On this occasion, as in 2020, 10 people with disabilities will participate as hosts in different events in which the value of inclusion will be privileged, for the sake of “a more humane city.”

“And it is that Mérida is a site of identities. Many of them will be present. The Yucatecan Trova will continue to be stimulated with new recognitions and new talent contests; the tribute to artists who gave us talent and art such as Sergio Esquivel, Armando Manzanero, and many other artists will be on the billboard ”, he declared.

The first concert of the Mérida Fest will be in charge of local and international artists, they will play boleros. The host, the Yahalkab group, will receive Colombian artists Katy James and Oriol Caro and will support Juan Pablo Manzanero.
