Could Yucatán be a lithium haven?

“Yucatán may have lithium, a basic mineral with a great future. We’re talking about 100 billion US dollars a year market”, informed Senator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, general secretary of the National Union of Mine Workers (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros).

The leader said that it is urgent to reform the country’s mining law since, in terms of concessions and distribution of national territory, 120 million hectares of the country’s 200 million hectares have been handed over, that is, 60%.

Gómez Urrutia mentioned that this issue should be linked to the energy reform. He also assured that the presidential initiative to nationalize lithium is to have control of a basic mineral that has a great future.

What is lithium?

Lithium is a key mineral in the world of technology, as it is used to make the type of batteries used in cell phones or electric cars, and to manufacture aluminum or multipurpose greases.

“It is estimated to be a 100 billion dollar a year market. Yucatán may have a lot of lithium and explorations will continue in other states of the Republic.”

“But in this case, the initiative to nationalize lithium is to control that what has happened with gold, silver, copper and other metals does not happen, that a number of national and foreign companies have monopolized everything for the benefit of a few and not for the majority of the rest of the population,” declared Gómez Urrutia.

Finally, he ratified that it is possible that there is lithium in Yucatán and that exploration was ongoing already.
