City of Mérida Marathon to be held on Sunday, January 9, 2022

Mérida, Yucatan, (December 17, 2021) .- The City of Mérida Marathon returns, after a year of absence due to Covid-19, the Yucatan long-distance athletics will once again have one of its main showcases, to be held on Sunday, January 9, as part of the celebrations for the 480th Anniversary of the state capital.

This fair has positioned itself over the years in the preference of not only local, but national and even international athletes.

It should be noted that the same bag that was distributed in 2019 will be kept, with 30 thousand pesos in cash for the absolute champion of each branch.

The starting shot will take place at the Monument to the Fatherland, at 5:30 am, for the stellar event and half an hour later it will be the turn of the half marathon.

There will be the Free category (from 18 years old), in addition to the Submaster (from 30 to 39 years old), Master (from 40 to 49 years old), Veterans (from 50 to 59), Veterans Plus (60 years old and up) and the wheelchair mode. Space will be limited to 500 runners per distance.

In his intervention, the Director of Culture of the City Council, Irving Berlin Villafaña, announced that the institution he heads will join efforts in promotion and dissemination, important in the process of economic reactivation.

For his part, José Martínez Semerena, head of Municipal Tourism, stressed that with the Marathon there will be a projection of sports tourism that will place Mérida in the highest places of reception of participants in this type of events.

In addition to this, Miriam Canul Cob, president of the Yucatecan Athletics Association, gave the official endorsement of the competition.

The delivery of kits will take place on Saturday, January 8, at the Ciudad Caucel Sports Unit, where each runner must present their Covid vaccination certificate or a negative test no longer than 48 hours, as well as sign the respective responsive letter.

International marathoners Fernando Saavedra de León and Maribel Morales Hernández were in charge of modeling the official shirt.

The presentation was also attended by Regidor Rafael Rodríguez Méndez, president of the Special Municipal Sports Commission, along with various athletes’ clubs.
