BUENOS AIRES.- Peronist Alberto Fernández was sworn in Tuesday December 10th, as Argentina’s president before the 2019-2023 Legislative Assembly. Then, former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (2007-2015), who was sworn in as vice-president, did the same.
The retiring president, conservative Mauricio Macri, handed the presidential band and staff to his successor, after which the two joined in an affectionate embrace.
With Fernández’s swearing-in, Peronism returns to power with the challenge of reversing the recession and poverty that affects 35% of the population.
Fernandez, a 60-year-old lawyer, will also have to deal with the uncertainty generated by the coexistence with his vice president, the popular and controversial former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner (2007-2015), who is currently facing a trial for alleged corruption and has been named Vicepresident, despite being prosecuted in several court cases.
