In Yucatan there are 423 indigenous schools that provide basic education in Maya.
More than 32 thousand students across the state receive education in their mother tongue.
After the Congress of Yucatan approved that the teaching of the Maya language in primary and secondary schools will be mandatory, the Ministry of Education of the State of Yucatan (Segey), explained that it will be until the 2021-2022 school period that the gradual implementation of this plan will take place at local schools.
According to the Ministry of Education, there are 423 indigenous schools (initial, preschool and elementary), in which 1,464 teachers provide bilingual and bicultural education to 32,463 students (Maya/Spanish).
The objective of this educational plan is to make sure students receive lessons in their mother tongue, instead of just teaching Maya as another subject.
Finally, the Ministry of Education pointed out that there is a pilot program called “Let’s learn Maya”, which aims at teaching the language in urban communities of Mérida, and the idea is to gradually extend the plan to other public and private schools across the state.
