Supplements of Bacillus Coagulans GBI-30 could help Mexican children who suffer from upper respiratory tract infections

Did you know that there were 16,000 new cases of Acute Respiratory Infections in Yucatan each week in 2018? This significant number equates as Yucatan being the worst place in Mexico for incidences of Acute Respiratory Infections (Iras).

Iras are caused by germs that affect any part of the respiratory system and usually are most harmful to children who were born smaller, who were ineffectively breastfeed, those who are exposed to overcrowding or smoke, and those who haven’t had their complete vaccinations.

Iras symptoms include coughing, headaches, a high fever, hoarseness, pain or discharge from the ear, and a blocked nose. These symptoms often last no longer than four weeks. However, the cough can last a bit longer than that. Respiratory infections can sometimes lead to pneumonia, so it is very important that you seek help if you are struggling to breathe, if you have a fever higher than 38 degrees, or if your skin sinks between your ribs.

Study: Supplements of Bacillus Coagulans GBI-30 Might Be Able to Help Iras

A recent study has found that supplements might be able to help prevent children from suffering from upper respiratory tract infections.

One study found that regular consumption of the supplement Bacillus Coagulans GBI-30, helped to “reduce the incident rate of flatulence.” The scientists who made this discovery stated that “results suggest that GanedenBC30 may be used as a functional ingredient with positive immunomodulatory properties in children.”

Data published in Food Research International suggest that regularly taking Kerry’s GanedenBC30 probiotic helped to reduce nasal congestion, and hoarseness. The data also suggested that other supplements could help reduce the duration of URTI symptoms, such as hoarseness, fatigue, and headaches.

The study involved 80 school children between the ages of 6 and 8. It was a double-blind, parallel, and placebo controlled study, that was conducted over the course of three months. Some children were given a sachet containing GanedenBC30, whilst others were given a placebo sachet.

The results showed that the children who were taking the GanedenBC30 sachet had lower incidence of URTI symptoms (such as nasal congestion, bloody nasal mucus, and hoarseness) than the children who were taking the placebo sachet.

The researchers of the study concluded that the functional ingredient of GanedenBC30 could help to contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

“These significant findings will have a massive impact on children in Mexico who suffer from upper respiratory tract infections, because something as simple as taking a supplement once a day can help to boost their immune system,” explains Juana Casto, a nutrition spokesperson from Guiadesuplementos.mx. “Hopefully, more children and families will be able to get a hold of and take these immune-related proteins such as Bacillus Coagulans GBI-30.”
