SONORA Mexico (Times Media Mexico) – Authorities are investigating “Los Jaguares” a cell of the Sinaloa Cartel known for its violence. They control the region where the LeBarón women and children were ambushed and murdered the LeBarón family, an attack that left nine dead, three women and six children.
The criminal group “Los Jaguares” is a branch of the Cratel del Pacífico, allegedly responsible for the ambush against members of the LeBarón family in Bavispe, Sonora.
Chihuahua authorities identify “Los Jaguares” as one of the most bloodthirsty criminal groups. Led by Francisco Arvizu, aka “El Jaguar” they traffic crystal meth and cocaine to Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.
Chihuahua prosecutor, César Augusto Peniche, indicated that this cell of the Sinaloa Cartel controls drug trafficking in the border area with Sonora, a place that in recent years has faced multiple clashes with other criminal groups such as “La Línea”, “Los Salazar” and the “Jalisco New Generation Cartel”.
In an interview with Imagen Radio, he explained that the attack against the LeBarón was registered in Bavispe, Sonora, and that there was one person detained in possession of multiple weapons.
Meanwhile, members of the LeBarón family do not rule out forming self-defenses to protect their communities. Julián LeBarón stated that citizens must unite because “neither the political class nor the institutions are solving the insecurity”.
The five injured children were transported in a Mexican Air Force helicopter to Agua Prieta, Sonora. From there they were taken to a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, where they were declared out of danger. They are Kylie Evelyn, 14, shot in the foot; McKenzie, 9, wounded in the arm; Cody, 8, injured in the jaw and leg; Xander, 4, shot in the back; and Brixon, 9 months old, shot in the chest and a wrist.
In the afternoon, while visiting Bavispe together with the military, Chancellor Marcelo Ebrard warned that the attack against the LeBarons “was not going to stay that way; justice is going to be served”.
The Chihuahua prosecutor suspects this criminal group, as it currently dominates the plaza. “That area is known for its multiple clashes between drug traffickers seeking to win the square on the northern border with the United States and those who dominate it at the moment are Los Jaguares” he said.
In an interview, the state prosecutor mentioned that the northwestern part of the country, the borderline area of Sonora and Chihuahua is considered a “hot zone” since there, disputes between multiple cartels have increased in recent years due to the fragmentation caused by the capture of their original founders.
The prosecutor stated that the tragedy recorded in Bavispe “is the result of disputes between these criminal groups, so the Sonoran government must investigate the criminal groups and their clashes to find the culprits”.
Self-defense groups
Julián LeBarón, a relative of some of the victims, narrates how the attack left nine dead, including six children. John LeBarón, a member of the family that was massacred by gunmen from a drug cartel in Bavispe, Sonora, does not rule out that some of the members of the LeBarón community form armed guards.
Through a statement issued through his Facebook account, Julián LeBarón narrates the facts in detail.
Among them is how Christina, one of the victims, got out of one of the vans when she saw that they were attacked, and with her arms tried to stop the bullets and warn the triggers that other women and children were in the vehicles. “She gave her life to try to save the rest” where two of her children died next to her.
The five children of the LeBarón family who were injured during the attack on the borders of Chihuahua and Sonora are being treated at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Four were presumed to have left the hospital late yesterday.
All of them were transported by air. Their health was declared stable and out of danger, although delicate, according to their families through social networks.
In the meantime, the family is awaiting expert studies by Mexican authorities so that the bodies of the nine killed in the attack can be delivered to them.
Julián LeBarón, a relative of the victims, announced that some of them will be buried in Sonora, and others in Galeana, Chihuahua. So far, no date has been set for the funerals.
