Fake plastic surgeons plague the peninsula

YUCATÁN (Times Media Mexico) – The College of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery of Yucatan warned about the large number of people, who without academic preparation or certification, advertise on social media offering the performance of plastic surgery, which puts at risk those who require these services.

The board of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery of Yucatan requested that State Congress approves the initiative of reforming the State Criminal Code to punish those who perform medical surgical procedures without the requirements stipulated in the General Law on Health.

Roberto de Anda Gómez, president of the College, said that serious incidents have been reported with people posing as plastic surgery doctors and have caused irreversible damage to people including deaths in recent years.

“Up to 50 percent of the appointments we attend are for corrections of poorly applied surgeries and for each accredited specialist there are 20 that practice without the corresponding certification” he said.

De Anda explained that article 272 of the General Health Code establishes that in order to perform any specialty medical surgical procedure, the professionals who practice it, require a specialist’s certificate, legally issued by the competent educational authorities and a current specialist’s certificate that accredits capacity and experience in the practice of the corresponding procedures and techniques.
