Suspicious armed men spotted in Oxkutzcab, Yucatan set off the alarm

OXKUTZCAB, (agencies) – People living in a small community in the municipality of Oxkutzcab, south of Yucatan, have reported the alleged presence of armed men in the area.

The alleged armed men were spotted near a very small town, which is accessed through the breach connecting  the Yaxachén, Oxkutzcab community, with Hopelchén, Campeche.

The exact place where the suspects were seen is the rural community of Chunhuaymil, Oxkutzcab, Yucatán.

This highly unsual situation in the municipality of Oxkutzcab, near the stateline between Yucatán and Campeche, led to the mobilization of SSP and SEDENA personnel, who are now patrolling the Xul-Yaxhachén rural road.

However, the presence of Public Security personnel in the area is causing concern among locals in the communities of Xul, Yaxhachén and Huntochac, who are not used to see police armored vehicles in their hometown.

Oxkutzcab is located 103 kilometers (60 miles) south of Mérida (INEGI)

It is not specified whether the alleged armed men are members of organized crime group or not, but an operation is ongoing right now to detect these men, and find out if they are linked to criminal groups.

Authorities are extremely alert, to prevent any type of violent situation in the state of Yucatán (as it’s the case in other Mexican states).
