Man steals car in Mérida and crashes into a wall while on pursuit

MÉRIDA.— A man was arrested after he stole a car, was chased by police, and finally crashed into a wall in the San José Tecoh neighborhood.

The incident occurred on Thursday October 31st, just minutes after 6 in the morning, when the vehicle was parked in front of a tortilleria, and the owner was uploading merchandise and got distracted for a minute, moment which the thief took advantage of to steal his car.

The car owner immediately got into another vehicle and went after him, the chase was later joined by vehicles of the Ministry of Public Security.

The thief took Calle 54 at full speed, and at the corner with Calle 131, he lost control of the car and crashed head-on against the wall of a laundromat.

Colonia San José Tecoh is located just 9.5 kilometers (6 miles) south of downtown Merida.

The incident resulted in damages of thousands of pesos, and the car ended up totally destroyed, and even the engine fell off. The thief was unharmed though.

As the thief was virtually unharmed,he was immediately arrested and taken to the SSP headquarters on Periférico.

The street was closed by the police, and the agent of the Public Ministry arrived on site to conduct the proper  investigation.
