Tourists visit vandalized “Monumento a la Madre”

The protests that resulted in the damage of the Monument to the Mother (Monumento a la Madre) in Mérida, after the demonstration by so-called women’s rights activits on Saturday September 28th, have drawn the attention of people from all over the world. Most people on social networks stand against these types of expressions, but there are also those who support them.

And the tourists who walk the streets of downtown Mérida in large numbers, are also expressing their discontent regarding these acts of vandalism.

Durint the last two days, national and foreign tourists stop by and carefully observe the damage made not only to the statue of the Mother, but to the wholw Maternity Park. Tourist guides explain to them what happened in the place.

So far they have not been able to remove the paint, work has to be done in conjunction with the National Institute of Antropology and History: INAH.

The Monumento a la Madre is located on Calle 60, at the corner with Calle 57, in the heart of downtown Mérida.


On Monday September 30th, during the morning, Mayor Renán Barrera published a video on social networks in which he set the position of the Municipal Government after the damage caused in this place.
